NewsMaker writes that this is the second such action, the previous one took place on February 19th. The protesters demand that the government pay bills for gas, heating and electricity for three winter months – at the last action they adopted a resolution and gave the government a week to think.

The press secretary of the Action and Solidarity Party (founded by President Maia Sandu) said NewsMaker that the protests are an attempt destabilize the situation in Moldova.

Sandu said on February 13 that Russia plans to carry out a coup d’état in Moldova through opposition protests. She said that RF pcounts, in particular, on the Shor party, some veterans, former law enforcement officers and people known for their connections with the former leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova, businessman Vladimir Plahotniuc.

According to Sandu, the purpose of these actions is to change the constitutional and legitimate government in Chisinau to an illegitimate, pro-Russian one, “so that Russia can stop the process of European integration of the republic and use Moldova in the war against Ukraine.”

Context:

On February 9, 2023, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said, speaking at a special meeting of the European Council, that Ukrainian intelligence had intercepted Russian documents indicating Russian plans to destabilize the situation in Moldova. On February 10, the Moldovan special services confirmed that they were studying the information of their Ukrainian colleagues.

In Moldova, since the 90s, the conflict that began after the declaration of sovereignty has not been politically resolved “Transnistrian Moldavian Republic” (the hostilities ended in 1992). Transnistria is an administrative territorial unit of Moldova, but a “peacekeeping” contingent of the Russian Federation is stationed there.

In 2022, after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recognized Pridnestrovie as a territory occupied by the Russian Federation .

On February 23, 2023, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that Ukraine was allegedly preparing an armed provocation against Transnistria, “which will be carried out by units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.” The Ministry of Defense of Moldova refuted the statement of the Russian defense department.

According to the American Institute for War Research, the Russian Federation may be preparing an attack under a false flag in the Transnistrian region. According to the Ukrainian military, Russian troops will not be able to land in this region.
