Protesters believe that such a decision tramples on their rights

Dozens of citizens gathered in protest in front of the Court House because of the Supreme Court’s decision to revoke the right to change the gender marker in the documents of trans and intersex people in Bulgaria, BGNES reported.

Lilia Dragoeva, one of the organizers of the protest, pointed out that the decision of the Supreme Court is in absolute contrast with European practice, law and “where the world is developing”. She noted that with the protest they want to express solidarity with trans people and they want to categorically state that “such behavior trampling on the rights and right to existence of trans people is unacceptable”.

The Supreme Court rejected the possibility of legal gender reassignment

The organizer of the protest insisted that “EU laws be respected”. “We hope that there will be a change in the decision of the Supreme Court or at least brave judges who, despite this decision, will take steps and apply European law”, emphasized Dragoeva. She did not rule out more protests in the future.

Manuela Popova noted that at the protest you can see trans people, gays, lesbians, etc., who came to show solidarity. “The community will not surrender. We will continue to litigate and fight for our rights”, she is categorical.

Protesters held placards that read: “The possibility of legal gender reassignment is a human right, not a fad!”, “SC deprives trans people of their human rights”, “Shame on SC”, etc., as well as flags.
