Protect children’s sun capital

“Whatever the phototype of your child, his skin is thinner, and therefore more fragile, than that of an adult,” explains the National Cancer Institute (INCa). “She is not armed enough to defend herself against UV rays. As a result, “childhood sun exposure, particularly intense exposure that causes sunburn, is the leading cause of melanoma in adulthood.”

Protection operation

To protect children from sunburn, and therefore the risk of skin cancer, take the following measures:

– avoid exposing yourself to the sun at times when UV rays are the most intense (12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in mainland France);
– have them wear a T-shirt, hat and sunglasses that filter out UV rays, favoring dark colors and tightly woven fabrics;
– apply a suitable sunscreen (index 50+) to them regularly (at least every two hours), even if they are in the shade;
– keep in mind that umbrellas or shaded places still allow 50% of UV rays to pass;

Note: a baby under one year old should never stay in the sun. Always keep it in the shade and make sure it is well protected with a wide-brimmed hat and clothing (made of tight fabric).
