PRO – Edin Soso: Everyone involved can only win
The news about Achraf Hakimi’s supposed imminent change from Real to Inter Milan initially surprised me very much, because both my and the general expectation was that the 21-year-old Moroccan would return to Borussia Dortmund after two good to very good seasons Madrid returns and gets a chance in the team of Zinedine Zidane. After a few hours apart and sober consideration, however, I believe that the possible transfer makes sense for both Real Madrid and Hakimi.
Dani Carvajal is still the undisputed right-back at Real. At 28, he is in the best football age and will be able to play at the highest level to date for at least two to three years. If he does not injure himself or is spared due to English weeks, Carvajal will play at Zidane. Hakimi, on the other hand, would like to play regularly and would certainly not be satisfied with a backup role. Real, however, cannot guarantee regular assignments. So you run the risk of having an unhappy player in the squad who wants to be more than just a substitute, which from his perspective would also be completely understandable. It is also not clear how Zidane Hakimi evaluates and what he believes in the short to medium term. Is the player defensively stable enough to have a real chance in the team-internal duel against long-running Carvajal? Many open questions. The fact that Hakimi seems to be seriously considering leaving only confirms my suspicion that he absolutely sees himself as a regular player. The whole thing could also be interpreted as avoiding competition with Carvajal. If that is the case, it would be one more argument for the transfer.

Even without Hakimi, Zidane would have enough alternatives in the position that could temporarily relieve Carvajal. Nacho Fernandéz has always done this satisfactorily in the past. Álvaro Odriozola will soon be on the mat again in Valdebebas. And if the need is really great, there is still a certain Sergio Ramos, at least a trained right-back who could help out. Of course, none of these would be ideal solutions, but with Carvajal you have them.
Last but not least, one must also consider the possible transfer from a financial point of view. Real Madrid does not have serious financial hardships like many other European clubs, but it also has to at least partially compensate for the loss of revenue caused by the Corona crisis. With Gareth Bale and James Rodríguez, you already have two expensive players in the squad that you want to sell, but for whom it will be difficult to find potential buyers. The transfer fee of at least 40 million euros in the room would, in my view, be good business for the club. If the contract included a buy-back option that was favorable from a real perspective, as was the case with Álvaro Morata and his move to Juventus in 2014, I would definitely recommend the transfer. But even without a corresponding option, I would welcome this change under the given circumstances.

CONTRA – Filip Knopp: Bad deal, moderate alternatives
72 appearances, twelve goals, 17 assists: While one or the other loan experiment by Real Madrid has gone badly in the recent past, Achraf Hakimi’s stay at Borussia Dortmund was a complete success. For those who temporarily leave the royal at a young age, only game practice counts. Hakimi got it from BVB. And even better: it has developed splendidly. So much so that after his first season there was speculation as to whether he would not return to Madrid early.
For me, after two years in Dortmund, Hakimi would no doubt be ready for Real. This makes me all the more astonished at the announcement of a move to Inter Milan that seems to be almost as safe as possible behind the scenes. First, the handing over itself, and second, the type of deal: not another loan, which in my opinion would also have been unnecessary, but a sale! Means: Bye, Achraf! He would be gone! While details of salary (five million euros net per year) and contract term at Inter (until 2025) were disclosed at the same time as the first report, there is currently no talk of a possible buy-back option for Real. Nobody who likes the Madrilenians can like that. Even if there were one: Real would then have to spend a lot more than you are now taking – especially since sooner or later the football market would normalize again after the coronavirus pandemic and the transfers would skyrocket again. There are some experts who already predict this. So why the whole thing?
Take keyword. 40 or 45 million euros should be a fixed transfer fee – and that for one of the most promising foreign players in top European football, according to his advisor with Trent-Alexander Arnold from Liverpool “The best right-back in the world”. Definitely not enough for me. Yes, we live in a time when the corona crisis is also affecting the footballeconomy. But if you don’t get more than those 45 million, I would have no hesitation in choosing Real to stay with him in my own ranks to use his quality for himself rather than with a potential rival in the course of a championship- To give league season.
With his 19 scorer points this season, I would actually like to receive Hakimi cheering back in Madrid. Defensively, he may still have his shortcomings – but which player is perfect at 21? So you would have to build on Nacho Fernández, actually a central defender, as an alternative to Daniel Carvajal. B solution. Or on Éder Militão, also a central defender. C solution. Or on Ferland Mendy, left foot. Not the D solution, because it cannot be a reasonable solution there. Or Álvaro Odriozola comes back after his mega-flop loan at Bayern Munich (ridiculous three appearances against clear underdogs since January) in order to stay – which can be doubted, however, as he gradually wants to become a regular player with a well-known club . Impossible for him in Madrid.
Hakimi would not be set either, but he was more likely to share the position with Carvajal more or less. Also so that the 28 year old long-time favorite can be relieved. If you want to win many titles, you need the best possible squad. And Hakimi is better in this position than all the backups mentioned. A club that has the longer leverage must then consistently pursue its interests and exploit its position of power. Incidentally, it would be a shame that the player may now move away too quickly and avoid competition in Madrid.
