Proning Only First Aid, Still Needs Oxygen Tubes

Jakarta

Recently, information circulated about proning position can help patients COVID-19 who experience shortness of breath and decreased oxygen saturation levels. Not a new technique, proning has long been known in medicine. However, it is emphasized that proning is only as first aid.

The general chairman of the Indonesian Lung Doctors Association (PDPI), Dr. Agus Dwi Susanto, SpP(K), FISR, FAPSR explained that the lack of oxygen was caused by lung damage which disrupted the oxygen exchange process. This condition must be overcome by increasing the intake of oxygen.

Remember, gas oxygen in the air accounted for only 21 percent so that patients with shortness of breath need oxygen supplementation assistance.

“The first and most important thing is the addition of oxygen. Second, it is permissible to do prone, it must be done simultaneously so that people do not mistake that the prone position can improve saturation. The prone position must be accompanied by oxygen supplementation,” he explained to detikcom, Tuesday (6/7/2021).

Is it true that the proning position can help?

Dr. Agus explained that the prone or proning position is indeed recommended as a first aid step for shortness of breath. The reason is, when sleeping on your back, lung function in the back tends to be not optimal because it is depressed in the back.

“Therefore, the prone position in conditions like this is recommended to open the back areas so that the lung area at the back has maximum function so that oxygenation increases,” he explained.

However, he stressed, this step must be accompanied by oxygen supplementation and hospital treatment.

“In any case, it is mandatory to go to the hospital. At home, the risk of mortality is very high because there is more extensive lung damage. Only in the hospital, it cannot be done at home, medicines in the form of injection infusions, we must know very well that the condition It’s risky if you already need oxygen,” concluded Dr. Agus.
