Ivermectin reduces inflammation of the airways

Is ivermectin a new solution in the fight against Covid-19? As a result of the multiple controversies and failures surrounding thehydroxychloroquine or remdesivir, l‘ivermectin would present encouraging results.

So, what is ivermectin ? Used as antiparasitic treatment, invermectin has anti-inflammatory properties. In this regard, thestudy by the Institut Pasteur, published on July 12 and carried out on animals shows that this drug can reduce theinflammation of the airways. Thus, it would limit the so-called fatal inflammations.

In addition, researchers believe that this treatment would reduce the risk of loss of smell, a serious symptom of Covid-19. Thus, on the two groups of 18 golden hamsters which served as guinea pigs, 66.7% of hamsters who have not no treatment have seen their affected sense of smell, against 22.2% of hamsters treated.

No reduction in viral load

The results of this study show that ivermectin has an effect ofimmunomodulateur. This drug would therefore prevent a amplification of symptoms.

On the other hand, this treatment does not act on the virus replication, in other words, it cannot reduce its spread. « Surprisingly, we observed that treatment with ivermectin ndid not limit viral replication, treated and untreated models exhibited similar amounts of viral load in the nasal cavity and in the lungs. » explains Guilherme Djas de Melo, author of the study and epidemiologist. He pursues : ” Our results show that ivermectin has a immunomodulatory and non-antiviral effect.«

Be careful though, as you can read in the Institut Pasteur press release, “Ivermectin alleviates symptoms of Covid-19 in an animal model. » L’efficacy of this treatment on humans has therefore not been demonstrated. However, these advances are encouraging for taking the next step: to achieve human trials.

Pending additional data, theWorld Health Organization (WHO) still advises against take ivermectin for treat the coronavirus.
