Prominent Venezuelan opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez has fled his country and moved to Colombia. His father tells news agency AFP that he is on his way to Spain.
Lopez has stayed at the residence of the Spanish ambassador in the Venezuelan capital Caracas since last spring. “I can confirm that he left the embassy of his own free will and secretly left Venezuela,” said his father.
Lopez was previously sentenced to almost fourteen years in prison for, among other things, inciting violence against President Nicolás Maduro’s regime. In 2017, Lopez was released on parole, after which he supported the advance of opposition leader Juan Guaidó. He has declared himself interim president, with the support of many Western countries.
Lopez’s wife and their three children have been living in Spain since June last year, just like his father. Many Venezuelans have fled repressive Venozolan rule.
Parliamentary elections have been announced for December and are being boycotted by the Venezuelan opposition.
