Ottar Brox was a prominent sociologist and SV politician. He died on Friday, aged 91.

He was best known for the book “What happens in Northern Norway?” from 1966. He has also written several other books.

Brox was from Torsken on Senja in Troms. He is one of Norway’s most renowned sociologists.

Brox was a professor at the University of Troms (UiT) when it was first opened in 1972, until 1984. He sat in the Storting for Troms from 1973 to 1977, and was later on the city councils of both Bergen and Oslo.

He lived in Oslo for the past 40 years.

– First of all, it is very sad. We last met in October. He was then sad that he could no longer write polemical texts. But until he was 89 he was in full operation, and we have to take into account that he was almost 92, says Nils Aarsæther, professor emeritus at the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Tromsø, to Nordlys.

He was a student, colleague and friend of Brox.

Northern Lights first reported the death.
