Washington: The Jetpack Resource Center and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CARE) have reported an increase in Muslim representation in the mid-term elections in the United States. Jetpack Resource Center Executive Director Muhammad Missouri said representation in decision making is critical.
Abdul Nasser Rashid and Nabila Syed are expected to win elections representing District 21 of the State Chamber and District 51 of the State Chamber. They will be the first Muslims to be elected in the Illinois state legislature.
If Nabila Islam wins, he will represent District 7 of the state Senate of Georgia. Rua Roman represents District 97 in the State House. Islam will be the first Muslim woman to be elected to the Senate. Roman is the first Muslim woman to be elected to the House of Representatives Munira Abdullah is unchallenged in the general election for District 9 of the State House in Ohio. She also became the first Muslim elected to the Ohio legislature. This would come with a win for Ismail Muhammad, a Democrat running for State House District 3. Democrat Mana Abdi made history in Maine State House District 95. South Portland Mayor Dekha Dhalak wins State House District 120 race.
Former Euless City Councilor and Democrat Salman Bhojani is expected to win Texas House District 92. If he wins, he will become the first Muslim elected in the Texas state legislature. Sulaiman Lalani leads the state chamber in district 76. In these mid-term elections, 145 Muslim candidates, including 48 state assembly candidates, ran for local, state and federal offices in 23 states. Still no clear win anywhere. According to Jetpack, there are currently 29 Muslim members serving in 18 states.
