With 10 million copies of Zelda TOTK sold in just three days, Nintendo’s masterpiece inevitably finds itself in the spotlight of the mainstream press. Thus, the latest article in the Washington Post offers producer Eiji Aonume the opportunity to talk about the development of Tears of the Kingdom.

As Aonuma himself emphasizes in an interview, the main tasks he has focused on over the past year have been optimization and the need to “conveying the TOTK philosophy» enthusiasts.

For example, a Nintendo spokesperson reveals that since March 2022, when the Zelda BOTW sequel was announced to be delayed, development on Tears of the Kingdom has almost been completed:

“We wanted to make sure everything was 100% up to the quality standards we set for ourselves.”

So over the past year, Aonuma’s team has focused almost exclusively on optimization and code polishing to ensure a smooth launch.

Regarding the “TOTK philosophy”, Aonuma recalls the Zelda Tears of the Kingdom video from the February Nintendo Direct and says that “with this trailer, people didn’t understand what the gameplay elements of the new Zelda could be, they didn’t know how fun gameplay could be“. It was this realization that prompted him to make a 13-minute video demo of the most important aspects of Zelda TOTK’s amazing gameplay.
