Minister of Social Affairs Petra Köpping: “Acknowledgment and thanks for the help”

The war in Ukraine does not stop at children and young people. Numerous groups of children who were evacuated by bus from homes in the Ukraine have arrived in Saxony. In addition, however, children and young people are also fleeing alone. They have a very special need for protection and need quick and prudent help.

Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping: »The fate of displaced children and young people moves our hearts. I thank all citizens who agree to support the most vulnerable and want to offer them a safe place to stay. Not only private households are willing to help, many supporting organizations are also pooling their strengths and capacities at the moment. They also deserve thanks and recognition.«

The admission of refugee children and young people, regardless of whether in a private household or sponsorship of any kind, requires official registration in any case, namely with the local youth welfare office.

The registration and announcement of private help primarily serves the well-being of the children and young people affected. The offices need the cooperation of all parties involved for their legal mandate of the state guardian’s office. However, the official registration is also a prerequisite for access to the state care and benefit systems.

In addition, Ukraine, as the homeland of the refugees, rightly has a strong interest in the whereabouts of the children and young people who have been taken abroad. Registration in this country enables bilateral data exchange and provides the necessary information for the family members who have stayed behind at home. Official registration is also the most effective form of protection for voluntary work, as help becomes affordable and traceable in accordance with the law.
