Private heating schools: Lyon city hall commandeers striking agents

Faced with the strike of the agents of the management of the buildings of the city, on Tuesday the city hall of Lyon (Rhône) decided to requisition agents to restore the heating in schools and kindergartens. The movement, well followed since the beginning of the school year on Monday, is led by the CGT and particularly affects primary schools.

The agents were supposed to put heating on the city’s buildings “for several days and this, even when they were on duty,” estimates the city of Lyon in a press release, which reports an exchange Tuesday morning with the strikers.

“Show responsibility”

“They (…) have been asked to show responsibility when the temperatures recorded are particularly low in some classes and sections of early childhood,” the city hall continues in a statement, deploring the decision of the strikers to keep their movement. For its part, the CGT indicates that the strike notice was filed in mid-October. And the opening of the radiators has been moved from 1 to 7 November in view of the temperatures, which are mild for the season.

“The agents thought that three weeks would allow a compromise to be reached,” said Frédérique Michaud, representative of the CGT staff of the city of Lyon. The last meeting on Monday resulted in the “end of non-reception” by the city hall.

Heating engineers and electricians are asking for a salary increase of 200 euros to improve their diplomas, while the salary difference is 30% with the private sector, as well as “all the staff”, explains the trade unionist.

10 ° C in the classrooms

The Snudi-FO 69 union, which brings together school principals, teachers and other primary school staff, has for its part reported temperatures that can drop as low as 10 ° C in classrooms in the morning.

“Is this a suitable temperature? “The union asks in a statement, inviting the town hall to“ receive the striking personnel and satisfy their requests as soon as possible ”.

“There is a serious risk to the health and safety of children and further difficulties for families. If a strike movement is legitimate, it cannot be at the expense of the health of the most vulnerable ”, the ecological mayor of the city Grégory Doucet reacted.

“We fully understand that people are outraged, but the mayor has had three weeks to negotiate,” replies Frédérique Michaud, who speaks of a “last resort” to influence the discussion.
