RoyaltyPrincess Beatrix (85) broke her wrist while skiing in Lech, Austria, last Friday. She has now had surgery on her fracture and returned to the Netherlands, the Government Information Service reports.
Beatrix is otherwise in good health and will recover from her fracture at home. The princess’s already planned visit to the celebration of the 160th anniversary of the Royal Home for Former Soldiers and Museum Bronbeek on Friday 24 February has been postponed.

The princess, who stepped down as queen almost ten years ago, was missing last week at her sister Princess Margriet’s birthday party in Apeldoorn because of her winter sports holiday. She usually not only accompanies her sons King Willem-Alexander and Prince Constantijn and their families during the spring break, but can also be found in the Austrian snow one or two weeks earlier with Princess Mabel and granddaughters Luana and Zaria.
Still very active
In the mountains above the Alpine village where the Oranges have been going on winter sports for decades, Prince Friso ended up in an avalanche eleven years ago. A year later, Beatrix’s middle son died from the consequences of this accident. His family members have always lived in London, where spring break falls earlier than in the Netherlands.
Despite her relatively advanced age, Princess Beatrix still regularly sports. In the winter she skis, villagers in Lage Vuursche also see her horseback riding in the woods around Drakensteyn Castle, where she has lived since her abdication. Prince Friso’s grave, in the cemetery at the Stulpkerk, borders his mother’s grounds.
