Princess Alexandra Discovers Hidden Room in Egeskov Castle

Many royals like to live on more square meters than most people, in large castles surrounded by lush gardens. This applies not only to the heirs to the throne, but also to further relatives.

In Denmark, as in many other European monarchies, old castles abound, and several of them are inhabited by the royal family. Princess Alexandra (52), niece of Queen Margrethe (83), is among them.

Reveals secret claim

Together with her husband, Count Michael, she lives at Egeskov Castle, which is half an hour’s drive south from Odense on Funen in Denmark. Some time ago, parts of the castle needed renovation, like most buildings.

However, refurbishing an ancient castle can lead to a bit of everything.

Discovered hidden room

It was in 2020 that parts of the castle were refurbished, specifically the guest rooms. When it was time to paint, however, it came to an abrupt halt.

The princess and the count got a never-so-small surprise, they say Picturemagazine.

– I am curious and always find it interesting to find out if there is something we don’t know about the house. When we were going to paint the room and had taken down everything from the walls, I knocked on them and said to my sister (Princess Nathalie, journ.anm.) who was visiting: “It’s hollow here”. Then we suddenly see that there are some hinges that have been painted over, which made me wonder, the princess tells the magazine.

She then allegedly went to her husband, who refused to believe it, as he thought he knew his own house, which he has lived in since 1992.

Breaking royal tradition

Letter from great-great-grandmother

The count nevertheless had to crawl to the cross, because it was true that Princess Alexandra had discovered a hidden room in the castle. He then found tools and made his way into the room, which turned out to be approximately two and a half meters deep and two meters high.

– In the innermost right-hand corner was a painting that was in very poor condition, and at the very bottom of the floor was a bowl with a small letter from my great-great-grandmother. “Hold on, then”, I thought, Count Michael tells Billedbladet.

The letter was addressed to “the one who opens this room in the distant future”, and had three coins with it. The letter was written in 1853.
