Price Gouging Scandals Targeting Tourists in Italy

Jakarta

The phenomenon of price gouging targeting tourists does not only occur in Indonesia. In Italy it is the same, and it seems to be worse.

Collect CNN, Sunday (20/8/2023), an Italian vacation may be an invaluable experience for some people. But the price swings in the summer of 2023 will be the highest in history.

Because, there have been many price fraud scandals in cafes and restaurants that have affected foreign and Italian tourists.

One example is a couple of tourists who were charged 2 euros (Rp 33 thousand) just to cut their sandwich in half on the shores of Lake Como.

On the other hand, there are young mothers who are charged 2 euros just to heat their baby’s bottles in the microwave. The location is in the seaside town of Ostia.

It doesn’t stop there, as a summer holiday destination, a couple of tourists are charged 60 euros (Rp. 1 million) just for two coffees and two small bottles of water at the Hotel Cervo in Sardinia.

The owner said the price was clearly listed and the fee was mostly for a view cruise which was considered expensive at a nearby port.

There are also tourists who are charged 2 euros for an extra empty plate near Portofino in northern Italy. And, there’s a 10-cent charge for chocolate sprinkles on top of a cappuccino at a Lake Como coffee shop.

Cafes in Italy rarely use chocolate in cappuccinos, therefore they justify the cost.

The cases above were dubbed “crazy receipts” by the local media. Its occurrence has been documented by consumer protection group Consumerism No Profit, which reported a staggering 130% increase in prices in tourist areas in Italy this summer.

So, it’s not just restaurant owners who are price-gathering. High fuel and energy prices make for a very expensive summer.

Prices have become quite out of control, around 240% higher than other Mediterranean destinations. So many Italians ditch their usual local haunts for the August holidays.

Even Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took a short beach vacation in Albania this year.
