LapJasper Philipsen (23) has also won the fifth stage in the Tour of Spain after the second. Our compatriot from Alpecin-Fenix was faster than Fabio Jakobsen, yesterday’s winner, in a bunch sprint. Rein Taaramäe had to hand over his leader’s jersey to Kenny Elissonde after a massive crash in the final.

The fifth stage of the Vuelta a España took the peloton over a journey of 184 kilometers from Tarancon to Albacete. The ride was billiards flat, so a new bunch sprint seemed inevitable. A small side note: the region around Albacete is known for the wind – fans were eagerly mentioned beforehand.
–
Just like yesterday, the price was largely colored by an early flight of three. Pelayo Sanchez, Oier Laskano and Xabier Mikel Azparren combined a maximum lead of 6 minutes. The peloton was little or not worried – everyone there seemed to be mainly with possible fans in their heads.

Massive crash
It turned out to be unfounded fear, because apart from two meager attempts by INEOS Grenadiers and later Deceuninck-Quick.Step, the wind was not a spectacle. But the stage did weigh on, especially in the front. Sanchez was the first to get hurt, a few kilometers later Azparren also put a coin in the parking meter. Laskano had to fight alone against the chasing peloton.
–
At just over 15 kilometers from the finish – or after a 170-kilometer flight – Laskano’s story was written. The preparation for the bunch sprint seemed to be able to start in full, but then disaster suddenly struck. Mads Würtz Schmidt fell in the belly of the pack and dragged half the peloton into his trap. With the victims Romain Bardet and Rein Taaramäe, who had to give up his leader’s jersey after two days.

The front watch had a few more riders return, but then the sprint trains had to be put on the rails. Alpecin-Fenix again did an excellent job and put Jasper Philipsen off in pole position. Our compatriot started from quite far, but held on strongly and referred Fabio Jakobsen to second place. Stage victory number two for Philipsen, who also took over the green jersey from his Dutch competitor. And the red? That will hang on Kenny Elissonde’s shoulders from tomorrow.

Philipsen: “Page from yesterday turned over”
Alpecin-Fenix has done it again. The ProTeam once again piloted Jasper Philipsen to victory in the final. “Our team has not been riding together for very long, but it’s incredible what we do for each other,” said Philipsen in the flash interview. “It’s nice to be able to finish it. Yesterday I couldn’t do my sprint the way I wanted, but we turned that page. We are definitely going to enjoy this moment.”
–
Thanks to his stage victory, Philipsen immediately takes over the green jersey from Jakobsen. Is the points jersey a goal? “I look at it day by day and then we’ll see how far I can get. It would be a dream to win a stage in the green, although that jersey didn’t bring me luck yesterday. Hopefully next time,” Philipsen concluded with a joke.
