A collection of previously unreleased essays by JRR Tolkien will be released this summer. The book The Nature of Middle-earth is about his fantasy world Middle-earth.
The newspaper The Guardian reports that topics such as the immortality of elves, the geography of Gondor and what races can grow beards are discussed.
The collection of the Under the spell of the ringauthor is released by HarperCollins publishing house, who promises that the essays will “bring readers back to the world of De Silmarillion, Tales left behind in Under the spell of the ring“.
The publisher says that Tolkien continued to write about his fantasy world until just before his death. The new collection is, according to HarperCollins, a “treasure trove that gives readers the chance to see over Tolkien’s shoulder.”
According to the newspaper, the descendants of Tolkien, who died in 1973, have given permission for the publication of the essays.
From Hobbit, Tolkien’s first book on Middle-earth, came out in 1937. The book series Under the spell of the ring (The Lord of the Rings) followed in the 1950s. About half a century later, the books were successfully filmed.
