Residents are active during hot weather in the Hotel Indonesia roundabout, Jakarta, Monday (24/4/2023).

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Secretary General of the Indonesian Association of Surgical Oncologists (PERABOI) dr. M. Yadi Permana, SpB(K) Onk said he was diligent in monitoring Index UV on the phone can help prevent sun exposure which can cause skin cancer.

“On the cellphone, we can see in the weather forecast what the UV index is this afternoon. If it’s more than 5, it’s already dangerous, don’t be exposed to it too often,” Yadi said in a health discussion recently.

The UV index limit that needs attention is above five to seven, meaning higher exposure to ultraviolet light which can cause an increased risk of skin cancer. If you have to do activities for a long time, such as exercising outdoors, it is recommended to use a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 for higher protection. In addition, it is also recommended to wear long sleeves, hats and sunglasses to reduce direct exposure to ultraviolet rays on your hands and face.

“If we are active for a long time outside we are recommended to use an SPF of 50, for an SPF of 30 or 50 it indicates the level of protection, the thickness of the protection sunscreen against UV, the greater the number the better the protection because it is thicker,” said Yadi.

This doctor who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia said that exposure to sunlight plays a role of 20 percent to 50 percent or even more in the risk of developing skin cancer.
