Cold wind and lack of a hat and scarf in winter can lead not only to ARVI, but also to serious neurological pathology. Neurophysiologist Alexander Rossinsky told Klops how to avoid getting neuritis of the facial nerve.
Facial neuritis, or Bell’s palsy, is a condition that causes tightness or weakening of the facial muscles. Because of it, a person cannot close his eyes, mouth and speaks to one side. A weakened immune system can provoke the disease.
“It’s no secret that the winter season is a period of reduced immunity. A weakened body can easily pick up any infection, most often through the paranasal sinuses or basal cysts of the teeth. [После недуг] spreads to nearby nerves, including the facial one,” the doctor explained.
The infection may be asymptomatic, but at the moment of severe hypothermia or stress the body will lose ground. “Most often, diabetics and people with chronic ENT and dental pathologies are at risk for neuritis,” Rossinsky said.

Symptoms of facial neuritis
- Weakness of the facial muscles. People who are ill, for example, cannot puff out their cheeks or hold liquid in their mouth.
- Asymmetrical smile – one of the corners of the mouth will be lowered.
- Changes in sensitivity of the front of the tongue. Taste sensations change: food tastes bitter, numbness is felt on the tip of the tongue.
- The eyes do not close completely; the symptom is especially pronounced on the affected side of the face.
- There is no way to tighten your lips with a tube.
- Pain behind the ear on the affected side.
- Tearing from the eye on the affected side.
“Neuritis of the facial nerve can only be treated in a hospital. In 25% of cases, the face does not recover after the illness. That is why correct and timely diagnosis under the constant supervision of a neurologist is necessary,” the doctor insists.
