Preventing Dengue Fever: Eradicating Mosquito Nests with 3M and Boosting Immunity

Jakarta (ANTARA) –

Director of prevention and control of infectious diseases, Ministry of Health, Dr. Imran Pambudi MPHM said, in the rainy season, people need to eradicate mosquito nests with 3M and increase body resistance to prevent contracting dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF).

“That’s why 3M, especially eradicating mosquito nests, is important. And how to maintain the body’s immune system because during the transition season, people usually catch colds easily,” said Imran in a discussion on preventing dengue fever in Jakarta, Sunday.

Imran said that by November 2023, there would be 70,600 cases of dengue fever recorded throughout Indonesia and there would still be around 506 deaths.

Eradicating mosquito nests by carrying out 3M (draining, covering, burying) can be an effort to reduce the death rate due to dengue fever which is targeted to be zero deaths by 2030.

He said dengue fever is a virus carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. More than half of dengue fever cases are asymptomatic.

In the rainy season, it is feared that water reservoirs that are not cleaned will become nests for mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus.

Apart from that, mosquito behavior can also cause a high number of dengue fever cases because in hot temperatures, mosquitoes will bite more often, twice a day. Meanwhile, at low temperatures, mosquitoes bite once every five days.

From here, Imran reminded us to carry out the 3×10 campaign, namely every Sunday, take 10 minutes at 10 am to take action to eradicate mosquito nests in the house, such as hanging clothes and dispensers for 10 weeks.

“The goal is to eliminate mosquito nests, because the mosquito egg cycle is 3-4 weeks, so if it goes 10 weeks in a row, it is hoped that mosquitoes will not have time to lay eggs,” said Imran.

Apart from that, another way to help reduce the number of cases is to prevent transmission and don’t take them to a health facility too late so that it doesn’t become serious.

If treated late, dengue fever will be more difficult to cure and the blood will become thicker so that the heart fails to pump blood.

“If your kidneys are dehydrated, you have to undergo dialysis,” he added.

In line with the many treatment innovations, Imran said that now doctors can diagnose dengue fever earlier with a rapid blood test.

So it is easier to diagnose dengue fever from no symptoms to severe symptoms, to reduce the death rate.

Vaccination is also available at all nearby health facilities and the public is encouraged to carry it out to help Indonesia achieve zero deaths from dengue fever.
