President Ilūkste will start a cycle of discussions on Latvian historical lands – in Latvia – News

As informed at the Chancellery of the President, with the visit of Sēlija, the President will start a cycle of discussions on Latvian historical lands. At the Ilūkste Culture House, the President will hold a conversation on Sēlija’s identity and development.

Levits drew attention to this issue in the context of administrative-territorial reform. Levits criticized the way in which this reform was carried out, as it did not include issues of cultural and historical affiliation, the preservation of the identity of unique cultural spaces and local communities, so he is determined to submit a draft law on Latvian historical lands to the Saeima soon.

Levits said that these historical lands are mentioned in the Satversme, but they do not have an institutional framework, for example, in his opinion, Selija should be included among these lands.

Levits will also visit the Rainis Museum “Tadenava” in Jēkabpils region and in Sunākste will see the “Abeces trail” created in 2014 in honor of the 300th anniversary of Old Stender, and the cemetery of the Stenders family. The President will also visit the organic farm “Liepas” in Akniste region.

Before Sēlija’s visit, Levits and former President Vaira Vike-Freiberga will visit the Garden of Fate, where they will plant dedicated oaks, to celebrate the 15th anniversary week of the Koknese Foundation, which initiated the idea of creating the Garden of Destiny.
