Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is challenging some of the results of the presidential election three weeks ago. CNN Brazil reports that it has asked the court to invalidate the votes of some electronic voting machines.
Malfunctions of old voting machines may have “tainted” the election. Votes cast on these machines should therefore be declared invalid, say Bolsonaro and his supporters
Right-wing populist Bolsonaro, sometimes referred to as Brazil’s Donald Trump, had more or less resigned himself to the narrow victory of his left-wing opponent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He got 50.9% against Bolsonaro’s 49.1%.
In his reaction to the election results, Bolsonaro said he would “respect” the constitution. Soon after, his cabinet chief announced that Bolsonaro had appointed him to lead the transition process.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the decisive second round of the Brazilian presidential elections. He won with a narrow majority.
33 million Brazilians are hungry
Lula makes a spectacular comeback with this one. Between 2003 and 2010, the 77-year-old politician also served as president of Brazil. He was famous for his social policies that lifted millions of Brazilians out of poverty. Lula has promised to resume that policy.
Improving the situation of the more than 33 million Brazilians who are now starving is, in his own words, very important to him. “The wheel of the economy will turn again,” he said in his victory speech.
Lula also promised to prevent the destruction of the Amazon region. On Sunday he stressed that the world needs rainforests. Lula has called for international cooperation to protect the area.
