President Biden Stands in Solidarity with Striking UAW Workers in Belleville, Michigan

On Tuesday, United States President Joe Biden went to Belleville, Michigan, to stand in solidarity with a group of workers who are members of the United Automobile Workers (UAW), a historic union in the automotive sector, who have been striking for days to demand the negotiation of a new Collective agreement. It was the first time in modern U.S. history that a president joined a striking union picket line. In Belleville there is a General Motors factory, which is among the large US car companies (along with Ford and Stellantis) where thousands of workers have been striking since September 15th. The strike initially involved workers in only three factories, but in the following days it spread to another thirty-eight.

Biden spoke briefly to the workers gathered in front of the factory: «The fact is that you saved the auto industry in 2008. You made many sacrifices, you made many sacrifices when companies were in trouble. Now companies are doing incredibly well and, guess what, you should be doing incredibly well too,” she said using a megaphone. “Persist, you deserve a significant raise and other benefits.”
