Brasilia. Despite the highest values in the corona numbers, a judge at the Supreme Court in Brazil cleared the way for face-to-face services at Easter. He issued an injunction on Saturday that states and municipalities cannot completely prohibit attending religious celebrations because of the pandemic. The judge declared bans that had already been imposed to be invalid, as reported by the Brazilian media. Nevertheless, there are several requirements: The places of worship should only be used to 25 percent of their capacity, masks must be worn and kept at a distance.
An association of evangelical lawyers had sued because the bans issued in parts of the South American country violated the fundamental right to religious freedom and the principle of state secularism. Especially in difficult times like now during the pandemic, consolation through religious activities is indispensable, the judge now argued according to the reports. Holy Week is of great importance for a predominantly Christian country.
Brazil is currently the state with the most daily corona deaths
In no other state are there currently more deaths from Covid-19 disease every day than in Brazil, the most populous Catholic country in the world with 210 million inhabitants. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 330,000 deaths have been registered there – only more in the USA. Last Wednesday, Brazil’s Ministry of Health reported the previous high of 3869 deaths within 24 hours.
