Preparation for Banten to Face a 20-Meter Tsunami Potential in Southern Java

SERANG, KOMPAS.com – Head of the Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Banten Nana Suryana admitted that she would continue to make mitigation efforts.

This was done after research from researchers from the Institute of Banding Technology (ITB) on the potential for a tsunami in southern Java to reach 20 meters was published in the journal Nature Scientific Report.

“This research is certainly an early warning as a form of vigilance for all of us. Especially those in the South Banten area, because of the tsunami-prone zone,” said Nana when contacted. Kompas.com, Monday (28/9/2020).

Nana explained, the potential for a tsunami in the South Banten area could occur. However, mitigation efforts continue.

Because, in its territory there are megathrust which is the collision zone between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates.

“Then the government has been doing the mapping since the tsunami caused by the Krakatau landslide, it has mapped which areas where buildings are not allowed to be built,” he explained.

Even so, the people of Banten, especially in the southern coastal areas, need not worry and do not have to panic.

If you panic, people’s activities will be disturbed and in the end, it will become a lingering fear.

“Of course, this is a warning to be more vigilant. Then we also carry out education and socialization to the public to stay alert,” he said.

So far, the Banten provincial government together with regencies / cities have carried out simulations, prepared gathering points and evacuation routes along the Banten coast.

“The evacuation point is already there, if a tsunami occurs, the community will already use it independently. However, the evacuation route will always be reminded,” said Nana.
