Gary Neville believes Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Manchester United can approach Manchester City and Liverpool this summer.
Former Manchester United player Gary Neville is aware that the squad must be strengthened towards next season, after the club secured Champions League games with a victory against Leicester on Sunday.
– It’s a big day for Ole. It gives him peace of mind and demonstrates that they have made progress. They can play in a different way now, after being very simple in their playing style for the first few months. “After Greenwood and Fernandes came in, it looks like they can win in several ways,” Neville told Sky Sports.

– Do not fall into the Mourinho trap
Although he believes United must strengthen the team, he warns Solskjær against falling into the same trap as he believes José Mourinho did.
– They need more players in the stable. The last time they were among the top four under Mourinho, they spent 170 million pounds that summer, and they did not use them wisely, Neville believes.
Manchester United brought in Fred and Diogo Dalot, among others, that summer, but probably never used the sums Neville claims. Nevertheless, his point is that United must spend the money wisely this summer.
– They have to invest properly this time, to get closer to Liverpool and Manchester City. They need to improve the freshman, and there is nothing negative about today’s freshman. It’s about bringing in players who want to play for the club. United have not done that for a long time. Ole seems to have done something about it in the last 12 months, and it works, Neville thinks.
Keane: – New midfielder and striker needed
Manchester United have brought in Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes after Solskjær took over the manager’s responsibility at the club.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane agrees that the squad needs to be further strengthened.
– I think they need a new midfielder. You want to have options all over the course, and they need another striker. It’s about bringing in quality players, and the right grades. Bruno Fernandes, for example, seems like a real professional and a good person, Keane believes.
The next task for Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men will now be match two in the round of 16 in the Europa League against Austrian LASK on 5 August. United won the away game 5-0, so it should be a formality to advance to the quarterfinals.
