Prediction of weather impact on roads Fear of warning-level heavy snow in Kanto Koshin Impact risk “high” until when

February 10, 2023 at 10:30

On the 10th, there will be heavy snow mainly in inland areas in the Kanto Koshin area, and there is a risk of snow accumulation in the 23 wards of Tokyo. In Kanto-Koshin and Shizuoka prefectures, the risk of roads being affected by weather is increasing. Driving with normal tires is dangerous. Be sure to equip yourself with snow tires, allow extra time, and drive more carefully than usual.

Fear of snowfall in the Kanto Koshin plains

Today, the 10th, there is a risk of heavy snow in Kanto Koshin.

It started snowing in Kanto-Koshin in the morning, and as of 10:00 am, it was 3 cm in Kofu, 4 cm in Lake Kawaguchi, and 1 cm in Chichibu. It’s snowing in the 23 wards of Tokyo.

There will be more snow after this. It looks like it’s going to snow in Tokyo’s 23 wards. Inland areas and along the mountains will experience heavy snowfall, and there is a risk that snow will pile up on the roads. On the evening of the 10th, warm air will come in as a low pressure system approaches, and snow will gradually change from snow to rain mainly in the coastal areas. Even where it turns to rain, the temperature will continue to be low until the morning of the 11th, and there will be places where the road surface will freeze.

As of 10:00 a.m., a heavy snow warning has been issued for Tokyo, Saitama, Kanagawa, Chiba, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Yamanashi, and Shizuoka prefectures, and a heavy snow warning has been issued for Nagano prefecture.

As shown in the figure above, the amount of snow that can fall in 24 hours is expected to be 1 to 5 centimeters on the plains and 10 to 20 centimeters along the mountains.

If the surface temperature becomes lower than expected or if the snowfall lasts longer than expected, a heavy snow warning may be issued even in the plains of the Kanto region.

Prediction of weather impact on roads

According to the “Prediction of Weather Impact on Roads”, it is expected that the impact will be greater in Kanto Koshin and Shizuoka Prefecture on Friday, October 10th. In the Kanto region and Shizuoka prefecture, the impact will continue until the morning of tomorrow, the 11th (Saturday).

In areas where heavy snow is expected, there is a risk of getting stuck and roads being closed. Please check the traffic information and consider revising the traffic route in that case. If you drive a car, be sure to equip it with snow tires, allow plenty of time, and drive more carefully than usual. Not only roads, but also public transportation, such as train delays and suspensions, may be disrupted. Please consider refraining from going out unnecessarily and non-urgently.

The temperature will rise during the daytime on the 11th tomorrow, and it is likely that the snow will melt in many places where snow has fallen on the plains.

Driving in winter

There are 5 points to be aware of when driving a car during this period.
(1) Let’s do the winter road equipment well. Change to winter tires or prepare tire chains. Driving on snow makes it easier for the battery to go up. When going out, don’t forget to check in advance, such as checking the spare washer fluid and battery.
(2) Drive slowly and carefully. If the temperature is low after it rains or snows, even the roads you are used to are likely to be frozen in unexpected places. Also, even if there is no snow, if the road looks black, it may be frozen, so don’t let your guard down.
(3) Sometimes taking a detour or refraining from going out is an option. It’s also a good idea to change your drive plan temporarily.
(4) Leave with plenty of time to spare. If you panic, you will inadvertently speed up even on a frozen road, which will lead to an accident.
(5) Check the weather and road information frequently. Roads may be closed to traffic.

Line up the initials of the five points and remember “Fuyutojiko”.

Frozen roads Places to be especially careful of

Roads that are wet from snow or rain will freeze when the temperature drops. Above all, there are four places where you need to be careful about freezing on the road surface.

(1) On bridges and pedestrian bridges, heat from the ground is difficult to transfer, and it is well ventilated, so it is easy to freeze. Especially when it’s blowing, the wind is stronger than other places, the visibility is bad, and it’s easy to freeze, so it’s pretty dangerous.
(2) The road conditions inside and outside the tunnel can be very different. At the entrance/exit of the tunnel, slow down enough so that you don’t suddenly lose control of the steering wheel due to the frozen road surface.
(3) It is important to slow down sufficiently before approaching intersections and curves. If you step on the brake while turning the steering wheel, it becomes very slippery. Also, when accelerating, step on the accelerator after making a turn at an intersection or curve.
(4) Shade takes time to completely melt once the road is frozen. Please be careful when passing through roads that tend to be shaded, such as the north side of a building.
