In Birmingham all eyes were on Sir Mo Farah tonight, but Bashir Abdi is usually around.
Our compatriot is one of the Belgian spearheads for the marathon at the Olympic Games, but he has also made his mark on the British track.
Abdi was a bit slower than the French winner Morhad Amdouni (27’23″27) in 27’24″22, but with his personal best he also pushes the limit for Tokyo, although it seems unlikely that Abdi will expand his program .
It may have been an evening with mixed feelings for Abdi. His bosom friend Sir Mo Farah, 38 years now, tried to qualify for the 10,000 meters in Japan tonight.
Farah won gold in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters at the 2012 and 2016 Games, but after a less successful switch to the marathon, he wanted to give everything again on the track.
It was not a successful comeback after 4 years and it was also a rare defeat. Farah stayed well above the limit and may more than likely put his ambition aside. The qualifying period will run until June 29.
