Powerful Earthquake and Tsunami Hit Central Japan – Tsunami Warning Issued

Japan Earthquake: A powerful earthquake and tsunami hit central Japan and its western coast on Monday.

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake caused waves as high as one meter in some parts of Japan’s coast.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama. Authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage. The warning is that there will be more earthquakes

The authorities advised the residents of the areas to be cautious as there is a possibility of further earthquakes. People in tsunami-prone areas are advised to evacuate as soon as possible.

The earthquake left thousands of homes without power, and flights and rail services to the affected area were disrupted. Utility provider Hokuriku Electric Power said more than 36,000 households were without power in the Ishikawa and Toyama areas.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority said no irregularities were confirmed at Japan’s nuclear power plants following the strong earthquake. Hokuriku’s Shika plant in Ishikawa, which is closest to the epicenter, had shut down two of its reactors for routine inspections before the quake and was unaffected by the quake, the agency said.
