Power Outages in Iraq’s Poor Neighborhoods Worsen Heat Crisis

Iraqi families in poor and densely populated neighborhoods suffer from continuous power outages, which exacerbates the current heat crisis, which in some areas has reached 50 degrees Celsius for consecutive days.

The hot summer flames are harsh on the Iraqis here in Al Fadwa neighborhood, Baghdad’s most densely populated neighborhood. The picture of suffering becomes clearer inside Abu Karar’s house. The atmosphere turns to hell with the advent of the noon hours and the frequent power outages for several hours.

Abu Karrar describes to “Sky News Arabia”, while he was sweating, his suffering with the heat wave, saying: “The most important thing is electricity, our house is hot, and there is no outlet in it because it is closed. We sometimes have to leave the door of the house open because of the heat, and we sit outside the house waiting for the electricity to return.”

The Abu Karrar family does not have modern air conditioners, like thousands of Iraqis who depend on air coolers, but these coolers have become useless due to the lack of water.

An Iraqi citizen says: “During the day and at night, the water is cut off, and the electricity is cut off. The last period was cut off for 3 days, and we did not turn on the air cooler, especially at night. The house becomes like an oven.”

And the lady adds to “Sky News Arabia”: “The electricity is supplied to us two hours by an hour before it came, and the electricity came back, so we don’t see electricity at all. Thank God, there are generators.”

In general, the current government has succeeded in raising the levels of electric power production, but touching temperatures of fifty degrees Celsius for consecutive weeks and the aging of electricity distribution networks increases the obstacles that help Iraqis overcome the ordeal of the summer season.
