The event industry in Germany has been at a standstill since mid-March due to the restrictions in the context of the corona pandemic.
No easing is foreseeable for an industry whose core business is essentially human interaction. Aid programs launched so far are not sufficient to ensure the survival of companies and jobs across the board. The “Association for the Support of the Cultural Diversity of the Posthalle” writes in a press release.
Flaming appeal from the event industry
The “Night of Light” on this Monday, June 22nd, is described by the initiators on their website as “shining memorial and a flaming appeal of the event industry”, which symbolizes the red lighting of buildings. Under the hashtag # nightoflight2020, the pictures of the campaign should spread all over the world.
The funding association organizes the participation of Posthalle and Chambinzky in this campaign with the Theater Chambinzky eV and the umbrella organization of independent cultural organizations. Because the Würzburg cultural scene and its plight are no exception at the moment.
A round table on the perspectives of the cultural institutions on May 29 did come up with various suggestions as to what the individual cultural houses expected from the city. Depending on the sponsorship, aspects such as tenancy decree or ?? especially at the independent institutions Posthalle and Chambinzky ?? Rent subsidies for language. Mayor Christian Schuchardt has pledged his support, the statement said.
“It is significant that only considerable efforts by the state are now required to maintain a cultural country and Würzburg as a cultural city. However, the city has already talked down a municipal rescue package in advance,” says Csaba Béke, director of the Chambinzky theater and chairman of the Posthalle Association.
If necessary, municipal support is also needed
Jojo Schulz, operator of the Posthalle, comments similarly: “In the past twelve years we have so far managed to offer a broad cultural program that is valuable to the city without help. In this emergency situation, municipal support is also needed, otherwise it is as if the umbrella would be taken from the first drop of rain. “
An initiative by the members of the state parliament, Volkmar Halbleib and Patrick Friedl, shows that the safeguarding of cultural businesses without local authority has reached national politics. They want to use the current situation as an opportunity for a long-term solution.
“The crisis is like a burning glass on the post hall, we need a new location and a future perspective for the post hall,” says Friedl. Discussions with the city administration in this regard have, however, stalled since early February.
The umbrella organization of independent cultural organizations contributes constructively to the discussion and makes the following suggestion: “Like many other cultural institutions, the Posthalle needs support. Assuming the rental costs would be a suitable and effective tool.”
Survival of the cultural scene depends on measures
In times when small stages cannot begin to work economically due to the spacing rules, the city can rent the post hall on a weekly basis and leave it to the cultural scene free of charge. That would be a win-win situation. “
Of course, health is paramount for everyone involved. The initiators do not want to question any of the restrictions, the statement concludes. Actions like the “Night of Light” should rather be an urgent indication that the survival of the cultural scene after Corona depends very much on measures in the present.
