Post-Sportverein wins one of the two main prizes

“Friendship, sociability, camaraderie, fun and discipline”: These are just a few values that are upheld and lived in many shooting clubs. It is no different at the Post-Sportverein Würzburg and this is mainly thanks to the tireless work of the board. For this, the team, consisting of the chairman and 1st rifle champion Karl-Heinz Putz, the 2nd rifle champion Dr. Andreas Böhm, treasurer Bernhard Schreck, sports director Verena Putz and secretary Klaus Bolch, have now been awarded the prize for “Board of Directors of the Year”, one of the two main prizes in the Main-Post campaign of the same name. The prize is endowed with 1000 euros, donated by the Sparkasse Mainfranken Würzburg.

The Post-Sportverein was only created in its current form as an independent association in 2017. Before that, it was just a department in the Post-Sportverein Sieboldshöhe. As a result of the spin-off, the Management Board had to overcome a number of challenges in the years that followed. “As an association, we really started from scratch. We had to see where the money came from, we needed our own statutes and it was clear that we would have to do some construction work. Also with the support of Mayor Christian Schuchardt and the city council, among others Wolfgang Roth, we managed to get through this phase without taking on any debt,” says Chairman Karl-Heinz Putz.

Since then, the number of members has increased from around 170 to over 230. The oldest member of the club is a proud 98 years old, the youngest member just a few weeks: children can already be registered in the club with a family membership.

Renovation of the Schützenhaus was the major project

The major project that has kept the board busy in recent years is the large-scale renovation of the Schützenhaus. The almost 7500 square meter facility from the 1970s was equipped with a new gastro kitchen and a guest room with a bar area. The members of the association did a large part of the work. “It is estimated that around 15 men put up to 800 hours of work into the Schützenhaus. If it was written the evening before that we needed five men, they were there the next morning. You could see that the members live for the club,” recalls himself Karl-Hein Putz.

Other innovations on the site are the modern, digital shooting ranges and the extensive soundproofing. The modernization should make training much more comfortable in the future. In addition, there are acquisitions such as two robotic lawn mowers, which will make everyday club life easier.

Hardly any loss of members in the corona pandemic

Like many clubs, the marksmen have had to struggle with the corona pandemic in recent years. Thanks to a shift system and sufficient spatial separation, the open-air shooting range was able to remain open almost continuously in compliance with the applicable hygiene guidelines, but the conviviality, which is an important pillar of club life, was completely absent. “We tried to keep in touch via email and formed small groups, but club life wasn’t the same. It’s all the more gratifying that we didn’t have a major loss of members,” explains Treasurer Bernhard Schreck.

The association can currently report an increasing number of members. They rely primarily on word of mouth and are very open to newcomers. The shooting ranges are also made available to foreign students who otherwise only have training opportunities in their distant home country. People for whom the use of firearms is part of everyday work are also frequent guests of the club and in the near future regional training courses for sport shooters will also take place on the ultra-modern site.

In the Main Post campaign “Board of the Year” In addition to the Post-Sportverein, three other board members of sports clubs and also “good souls” in the club were honored for the year 2022. The campaign is organized in cooperation with the city of Würzburg and the district office, the prize money is donated by the Sparkasse Mainfranken Würzburg.

All honored board members and the “Good Souls” will be presented in detail by this editorial team in separate articles over the next few days.
