Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca issued a statement this Sunday condemning the possibility that Benfica and Sp. Braga, the club he coached, are negotiating the sale of players to Russian clubs.
«During this last week I have been reading that Benfica and my Sp. Braga are considering selling Chiquinho and Tormena to Russian clubs. Benfica, which in an exemplary way has developed campaigns to help Ukraine since the beginning of the war. My Braga commanded by sensitive people with huge hearts», begins by reading the note issued by the Portuguese coach who worked two seasons in Ukraine.
Paulo Fonseca, who has a Ukrainian partner and was in the country when Russia invaded Ukraine, gives the example of what happened in Italy, when a Russian club tried to sign a Sassuolo player.
“I don’t want to believe it. I refuse to do it. Two weeks ago, a Russian club tried to buy Rogério, Sassuolo’s left defender. The Italian club refused to enter into negotiations and said that for ethical reasons related to the war it would never do so. I was proud to think that “my world” remains an example », he wrote.
In this sense, the current coach of Lille leaves a request to the two Portuguese clubs not to accept «money dripping with the blood of children who die every day in Ukraine».
«I launch an appeal for Benfica and my Braga to follow the example of the Italian club. I know time passes and people in their homes tend not to hear much news related to the war in Ukraine. But every day Russia continues to kill people and especially innocent children, maybe some of them at home while watching a football match. One thing I know, if Benfica and my Sp. Braga close deals with Russian clubs, that money will drip with the blood of children who die every day in Ukraine. And many of these children loved football.”
