The 26-man squad announced by coach Fernando Santos includes nine other players signed by English Premier League clubs alongside Ronaldo. They include Manchester City playmaker Bernardo Silva and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes.
Not including former Bayern pro Renato Sanches (Paris SG). The disregard of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ veteran star João Moutinho (36) was also surprising.
“Regardless of the names and discussions of whether this or that should be there, I hope that all Portuguese will support the national team,” said coach Santos. The coach, who brought Portugal to the European Championship in 2016, gave hope to the Seleção fans: “I think we can become world champions.”
Portugal will face Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea in Group H in Qatar. In the last two World Cup, the team has failed in the round of 16.
