One of 85 Portuguese in the district Lindau is called Romeo Almeida and lives in Lindenberg. The 30-year-old was born in Wangen, but his parents come from the Porto region. Almeida has dual citizenship and presses at the European Football Championship thumbs up in Portugal – the defending champion and German opponent in the preliminary round on June 19th.

We asked the father of two, who plays soccer at FC Lindenberg, to tell us a little bit about Portugal. It’s also a little bit about football.

  • Is Portugal a football country? In any case. Portugal has eleven million inhabitants – everyone watches football. We play beautifully and more and more successfully. At every European Championship and every World Cup, Portugal gets stronger and stronger – and we still have some talent. I’m really hot and have a fever. My heart flutters from the first minute.
  • Can you name three typical Portuguese characteristics? We enjoy good food and drink – especially wine. The friendliness is typical. We welcome every stranger with open arms. And we are hardworking workers. This is why the illiteracy rate is so high. Because many prefer to work early instead of going to school.
  • Which city / region in Portugal should you definitely see? Porto has a typical old town and is located by the sea. The seven bridges over the Duero river are beautiful. And of course the many port wine cellars.
  • What is the highlight of Portuguese cuisine? Stockfish from the grill or from the oven. There is also potatoes, long green beans, oil and garlic.
  • What do Germans really need to know about Portugal? My insider tip also has something to do with food: Franceshina. It’s a beef, ham, chorizo and egg sandwich that is topped with cheese. A thick sauce made from port wine, whiskey and tomatoes. Hardly anyone in Germany knows this, but you should definitely try it. I have a secret recipe for it that I won’t even tell my parents.
  • What is better or more beautiful in Portugal than in Germany? The women and the beach. I love the salt water.
  • Why do you still live in Germany? I was born here, grew up here and fell in love with Germany. I have my friends and family here. The standard of living is also higher. I like to be in Portugal on vacation, I like the scent of the eucalyptus trees. But I can’t imagine moving there.
  • If Portugal is eliminated from the European Championship: who will you keep your fingers crossed for? I actually expect Portugal to make it to the final again. We’re even stronger than 2016 and have a bomb squad – whether it’s Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo or Joao Felix. But if Portugal are eliminated, I will of course be for Germany. After all, this is my second home.
