Portugal, Spain, Japan, China, USA and Mexico invited

For the 2019 edition of the Copa America, Conmebol has decided to open the competition to non-South American countries and to invite six teams, including France.

France will not participate in the Copa America in Brazil in 2019. Normal, some will say, but this has been mentioned for a few months. Finally the Conmebol, South American football confederation, decided to invite two European countries: Portugal and Spain. But also two Asian nations: Japan and China. The last two nations are the United States and Mexico.

and 12 to 16 nations

Conmebol has innovated for this edition, with 16 countries taking part in the event. Whereas until now the competition was made up of 12 teams. A formula that was tested in 2016, with six teams from the Concacaf confederation (North and Central America) invited. This edition will also be the last in an odd year, the next one will take place in 2020 to align with the Euro calendar.
