Popular sport: Greens in Darmstadt against the opening debate

The Darmstadt Greens are currently rejecting calls for a gradual opening to sports clubs. There is fear of the spread of mutations of the corona virus.

The Darmstadt Greens have rejected the FDP’s call for a gradual opening of sport as “premature and misleading”. Premature opening debates led to uncertainty among clubs and athletes: inside and were in contradiction to the desire of the population for clear and uniform regulations in dealing with the corona pandemic, the district association announced on Wednesday.

At the moment it does not look as if the Chancellery and the Prime Ministers will decide to relax in the coming week. In addition, the opening of the sports facilities is not the responsibility of the municipality, but the state government. “We are in a very uncertain pandemic situation: the incidence is slowly falling. At the same time, we can observe the spread of mutations of the corona virus in other countries, which have a higher risk of infection and lead to extensive burdens on the health systems there, “said the party chairman and member of the state parliament Hildegard Förster-Heldmann and the state chairman of the Hessian Greens, Philip Krämer, With. Therefore opening debates made no sense at the moment.

FDP: Sports clubs need perspective

The FDP parliamentary group in Darmstadt recently asked the magistrate to draw up a step-by-step plan to gradually open up sport. Compliance with applicable hygiene concepts should “of course be the main guard rails for such a responsible and medium-term opening strategy”, it said in a press release.

“The sports clubs, but also fitness studios, need a perspective on how they can slowly increase their sports offer”, said Sven Beißwenger, parliamentary group chairman and sports policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group in the city council. The sports clubs were badly shaken by the closings due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Delays and ambiguities when the sport is resumed should be avoided. “Therefore, a step-by-step plan must now be drawn up that can be implemented immediately if the state legislature allows this”, Beißwenger continues.

Special fund for sports clubs

In the early summer of 2020, the city of Darmstadt created a special fund of 100,000 euros to support ailing sports clubs. In addition, the Greens in Darmstadt call on all citizens not to terminate their membership in the associations during the pandemic or even to re-sign it if possible. After the restrictions have ended, clubs, politics and urban society will need to make a concerted effort to revive volunteering and the variety of sports in our city, the Greens said.
