Popular Party Visits Algeciras to Discuss Future of Gibraltar and Infrastructure Needs of Port and Logistics Sector

The institutional deputy secretary of the Popular Party, Esteban González Pons, visited Algeciras yesterday, where, accompanied by the president of the local PP, candidate for mayor and senator, José Ignacio Landaluce, he held a meeting with Algeciras businessmen from the port and logistics sector. Before that meeting with representatives of the business sector, both attended the assembled media.

Landaluce remarked that we are facing a “critical moment” in relation to the negotiations in force between the United Kingdom and the European Union on the future relationship with Gibraltar after Brexit, and that, therefore, “we need, yes or yes, the defense of the interests in terms of infrastructures”, and that “we need the Campo de Gibraltar to benefit, not only from the post-Brexit, but also in terms of the capacity and competitiveness of what generates wealth and employment in the Campo de Gibraltar, mainly the Port”.

In this sense, he indicated that businessmen need “the necessary instruments” to develop the potential of this logistics and port sector.

As for González Pons, he said that he had come to engage with the businessmen of Algeciras and the Port. “· In Brussels, the disastrous rail connection of the port with Madrid is particularly well known”, and he stressed that “a very important investment in rail infrastructure is needed for the Port to develop” its full potential “. To this he added his “concern that is not calm, but restless, because the Campo de Gibraltar Plan, with more than a billion euros promised, nothing has been invested” and he wondered if the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, present yesterday at the province, he would discuss this matter with the media or go alone to take the photo. “The agreement between the EU and Gibraltar will come to fruition or not, but a great opportunity to invest in the area is being lost,” he insisted.
