“Pope Francis Reveals Vatican’s Involvement in Ukraine Conflict Resolution Mission”

The Vatican is involved in a mission that is trying to bring peace to Ukraine and end the conflict between it and Russia. This is what Pope Francis said to journalists on the plane he was traveling from Budapest to Rome, world agencies reported.
However, the pontiff did not give more details. “I want to do everything that needs to be done. There is a mission that is underway now, but it is not yet public. When it is announced, I will present it,” the pope said. “I think that peace is always achieved by opening the channels. You can never achieve peace by closing them. This is not easy,” the Pope added.

He said he spoke about the situation in Ukraine with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and with Metropolitan Hilarion, the representative of the Russian Church in Budapest. “During these meetings we did not talk about Little Red Riding Hood,” the pope said. Then he added that everyone is interested in the path to peace. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Francis has pleaded almost weekly for peace. He is said to have expressed a desire to mediate peace between Kiev and Moscow. But his bid has so far failed to make any breakthrough.

A few days ago, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal met with the Pope in the Vatican and said that they discussed the formula for peace proposed by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. He also said he had invited the Pope to visit Kiev. Pope Francis had previously said he wanted to visit Kiev but also Moscow during a peace mission.

The Pope also revealed to the journalists on the plane that he recently had pneumonia, reported France Press. However, he added that he is willing to travel. He confirmed that he intends to go in early August to Lisbon for the Catholic Youth Days, and then to Marseille in France in September, as well as to Mongolia.
