The Pope exhorts that courage is needed to accurately determine the truth, and that the administration of justice is an act of love and an opportunity for fraternal correction with the aim of helping one to recognize error.

Pope Francis was speaking as he inaugurated the 95th Judiciary at the Vatican on Saturday (02/03/24).

For Christians, the Pope said, this virtue, combined with fortitude in times of suffering, ensures steadfastness in the search for good and the ability to withstand trials, and is not a characteristic of the mind of only a few heroes. The Pope added that it is given and strengthened by communion with Christ as a result of the action of the Holy Spirit and received by those who invoke the Holy Spirit.

The Pope explained that it consists of a humble strength based on faith and closeness to God, which is uniquely expressed in the ability to work with patience and perseverance, rejecting internal and external conditions that hinder the execution of good.

The Pope said that even in well-organized, orderly and controlled societies, personal courage is always needed to face different situations with discernment and faith in the Lord, and without this healthy courage, one has to give in and ignore many exploits, big and small. The Pope added that it is an attitude of solidarity with brothers and sisters who bear the burden of fear and weakness, without aiming to become a hero himself.

Remembering the victims of war and the victims of human rights abuses, including persecuted Christians, the Pope stated that the Holy Figure gives us the strength not to surrender to these injustices and awakens in us the indignation and courage to fight against them.

The Pope reminded us that with this courage we are called to face the difficulties of daily life in the family and society, to strive for the future of our children, to protect the common home and to take on professional responsibilities.

The Pope said that judges need courage when they are busy ensuring the fair conduct of the trial process and when exposed to criticism, wishing them to always maintain Christian courage along with prudence in the service of justice.
