Pope Francis Announces Appointment of 21 New Cardinals, Including Monsignor Pierbattista Pizzaballa

THE APPOINTMENTS. In the consistory of next September 30, Pope Francis will appoint 21 new cardinals, including Monsignor Pierbattista Pizzaballa, 58 years old originally from Cologno al Serio, Latin patriarch of Jerusalem.

There is also the Monsignor from Bergamo Pierbattista Pizza ballLatin patriarch of Jerusalem among the names of new cardinals announced by Pope Francis on the morning of Sunday 9 July after the Angelus. The new cardinals will be nominated in the consistory of next 30 September.

Here are all the names: Msgr. Robert Francis Prevost, prefect of the dicastery for bishops; mgr. Claudio Gugerotti, prefect of the dicastery for the Eastern Churches; mgr. Víctor Manuel Fernández, prefect of the department for the Doctrine of the Faith; mgr. Emil Paul Tscherrig, apostolic nuncio; mgr. Christophe Louis Yves Georges Pierre, apostolic nuncio; mgr. ; mgr. Stephen Brislin, archbishop of Cape Town; mgr. Angel Sixto Rossi, archbishop of Cordoba; mgr. Luis José Rueda Aparicio, archbishop of Bogotá; mgr. Grzegorz Rys, archbishop of Lodz; mgr. Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, archbishop of Juba; Msgr.José Cobo Cano, archbishop of Madrid; mgr. Protase Rugambwa, coadjutor archbishop of Tabora; mgr. Sebastian Francis, bishop of Penang; mgr. Stephen Chow Sau-Yan, bishop of Hong Kong; mgr. François-Xavier Bustillo, bishop of Ajaccio; mgr. Americo Manuel Alves Aguiar, auxiliary bishop of Lisbon; Fr Angel Fernández Artime, rector major of the Salesians.

Together with the 18 new electors, the Pope will unite «the members of the College of Cardinals with two archbishops and a religious who “distinguished themselves for their service to the Church”: Msgr. Agostino Marchetto, apostolic nuncio; mgr. Diego Rafael Padron Sanchez, archbishop emeritus of Cumaná; father Luis Pascual Dri, confessor in the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii in Buenos Aires.

Who is Monsignor Pierbattista Pizzaballa

Born in Cologno al Serio, in the province and diocese of Bergamo, he began his training course with the minor friars of Emilia Romagna, attending middle school in the minor seminary “Le Grazie” in Rimini and completing his classical studies in the archiepiscopal seminary in Ferrara in June of 1984.

He took the religious habit on 5 September 1984 in the convent of Santo Spirito in Ferrara. In 1990 he obtained a baccalaureate in theology at the “Sant’Antonio” theological studio in Bologna, affiliated to the Pontifical Antonianum University in Rome; in the same year, on 15 September, he was ordained a priest in the cathedral of Bologna by Cardinal Giacomo Biffi. After a period of one year in Rome, he moved to the Holy Land, to Jerusalem, in October 1990.

The long experience in the Holy Land

In Jerusalem he enrolled in the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum (SBF), obtaining in 1993 a licentiate in theology with a biblical specialization. On 2 July 1999 he formally entered the service of the Custody of the Holy Land.

Guardian of the Holy Land

In 2004 he was appointed custodian of the Holy Land and guardian of Mount Zion, succeeding Father Giovanni Battistelli. In May 2014 Pope Francis entrusted him with the task of organizing the prayer meeting between the president of Israel Shimon Peres, the president of the Palestinian Authority Abu Mazen and the Pope himself in the presence of the patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I, a meeting held actually on June 8, 2014. He finished his caretaker job on May 20, 2016.

Apostolic administrator in Jerusalem

On June 24, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him apostolic administrator of the vacant seat of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, until the appointment of a new patriarch, with the dignity of archbishop. He received episcopal consecration on 10 September 2016, in the cathedral of Bergamo, at the hands of Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, co-consecrating the patriarch emeritus of Jerusalem of the Latins Fouad Twal and the bishop of Bergamo Francesco Beschi. The following 21 September he made his solemn entry into Jerusalem. On 25 October 2016 he was appointed Pro-Grand Prior of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem while on 13 February 2017 he was elected vicar vice-president of the Conference of Latin Bishops in the Arab regions.

Patriarch of Jerusalem of the Latins

Having resolved a large part of the economic crisis, on 24 October 2020 Pope Francis appointed him patriarch of Jerusalem of the Latins and on 28 October he imposed the pallium on him, in the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae. Sunday 9 July the news that in September he will become a Cardinal.
