So says the protocol. Before retiring, a bishop must resign to Pape. Saturday June 27, 2020, Monsignor Jean-Claude Boulanger, at the head of diocese of Bayeux-Lisieux in Calvados, said that his resignation was accepted by the sovereign pontiff. Aged 75, he can now retire.

A happy Ch’ti in Normandy

A native of Pas-de-Calais, Jean-Claude Boulanger had been appointed bishop in Calvados in March 2010. His age is the main reason which led him to resign:

I was a happy “Ch’ti” among the Normans, whether in the Orne or in Calvados. Throughout my ministry I have tried to serve the fraternity. “

A “goodbye” in August

Given the current health measures, he does not wish to organize a large gathering for his departure. However, he announced an appointment on Sunday August 30 at 3:30 p.m. for outdoor mass at the Basilica of Lisieux. “The opportunity to say thank you and goodbye”.

Jean-Claude Boulanger decided to return to the North. He intends to settle near Boulogne-sur-mer. He wishes to live in the “middle of the country people”, and to render services to the rural parishes and to the Foyer de Charité.

Waiting for a new bishop

In his letter to Mgr Boulanger confirming the end of his mission at the head of the Calvados diocese, a diplomatic representative of the Pope writes: “I would like to reiterate the gratitude of the Holy Father for the apostolic zeal, the generosity and the love for the Church that have always characterized your ministry as Pastor of the diocese of Bayeux. “

For the time being, the diocese of Bayeux-Lisieux therefore no longer has a bishop. A diocesan administrator should be elected in the coming days to provisionally govern the diocese. His interim will last until the appointment of a new bishop by the Pope.
