Candy, carols, mistletoe. And of course fairy tales. Without this, most of us cannot imagine Christmas. Since 1993, Czech Television has always prepared a new feature fairy tale for every Christmas Eve. Can you put them all together? And which one is your best? Let’s remind them all, so you know what to choose from.
Before the premiere Christmas tales began
Before 1993, film adaptations of the works of important writers appeared on Christmas Eve in prime time, or comedies were broadcast. We can name, for example, the dramatization of Jirásek’s Záhořanský hunt or the biography of Josef Dobrovský In the Morning Reds. The afternoon on television always belonged to younger viewers, because fairy tales ran on television. In the evening there was a program for adults. The exception was 1973, when Goldilocks was broadcast on prime time on December 24.
Over time, family movies began to air on Christmas Eve in the evening – for example, in 1977 it was the comedy How to Pull a Whale’s Stool. Since 1978, fairy tales have been broadcast as early as 7 pm, such as the fairy tale How the Princess Awakens or About the Firebird. Since the second half of the 1980s, only premieres have come to the point of fairy tales, such as About a Brave Blacksmith, There Are No Jokes with Devils or The Third Prince. In this case, however, it was not a fairy tale produced by Czechoslovak television. She first came up with a Christmas fairy tale in 1990, it was a fairy tale about Jan and a wonderful friend. The tradition of Christmas Eve fairy tales, as we know them today, was first introduced by Czech Television in 1993, when viewers saw the premiere of the fairy tale Seven Ravens.
An overview of Christmas fairy tales
The fairy tales that we can see for the first time on Christmas Day tend to be very popular. The fairy tale The Angel of the Lord had an absolute record in viewership. But Christmas Eve is not always successful. For example, in 2018, critics quite tore the fairy tale Magician Žito.

This year’s fairy tale, which we will see in its premiere tonight, is called How Not to Marry a Princess, it was directed by Karel Jonák. The main roles will be played by Marek Adamczyk and Anna Fialová. Three judges, played by Iva Janžurová, Daniela Kolářová and Naďa Konvalinková, have the role of the promoter. The central pair of Christmas fairy tales is united by the fact that they want to get rid of the fate predicted by the court. Prince Leopold is thoughtful and prudent. He spends a lot of time studying. Princess Josefina has naturalness and rebellion in her.
