Political Earthquake in Álava: Eduardo Barinaga Resigns as PNV Candidate for Mayor of Labastida

Political earthquake in Álava. Eduardo Barinaga, PNV candidate for Mayor of Labastida, has resigned. It does so just 48 hours before the investiture plenary session is held in this La Rioja town, in which the PP was the most voted list, and could govern. Unless PNV and EH Bildu come together. And that is where the doubt is in these last days.

As Naiz has advanced, Barinaga resigns in full debate on What position will the PNV adopt? Jeltzals must choose between:

Submit a candidacy for mayor and have the more than announced support of EH Bildu to govern. Or, on the contrary, not present a candidacy and allow the PP, with 4 councillors, to govern in a minority as the most voted list.

ABB request

As Barinaga has revealed on ETB (a channel of which he was director), it was Araba Buru Batzar (ABB) himself, who asked them not to present “any candidacy Saturday.” “Since I don’t agree with that, it makes sense to step aside and present my decision. And that’s what I’ve done”

His words contradict the speech of the PNV of the last days, in which they had denied any contact with the PP to establish institutions, not even in Laguardia and Labastida. The two towns in Álava in which the popular could govern and have their eyes on it.

In Labastida, the PP caressed the absolute majority. In Laguardia, only a dozen votes separate the PP and PNV. There, Raúl García, the candidate for mayor, did announce his intention to run, although the party leadership denied that they had given him such indications.

Now, after this unexpected turn of events, we will have to see the possible rebound effect in Laguardiathe other symbolic enclave due to its historical importance.

Official sources of the ABB have confirmed the decision not to present a candidate, and they justify it by the electoral bump. They point, in fact, to Barinaga “In the town the bet made with the independent candidate has not materialized. In Labastida we did not get the best results, losing more than 5 points while the PP rose more than 9”. Thus, the ABB insists: “The people have spoken clearly and in these conditions the most prudent thing is to contribute from a constructive opposition and reverse the situation in the following calls.”

What happened in Labastida leaves the PNV touched, which walks a fine line of political pacts. And it is that They do not want to give up the support of the PP. Not only in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Álava, where the ease of governing the next 4 years is also at stake.

Red lines for the PP

Also in various locations that are at stake this Saturday, such as Kuartango, Zigoitia, Ribera Baja and Oyón, where the PNV has not been the most voted list. In them, if the PP did not oppose, they could manage to govern.

Although the PP has not set conditions to support Maider Etxebarria in the Vitoria City Council, nor Ramiro González in the Álava Provincial Council, nor have they hidden their desire to lead Labastida and Laguardia.

What’s more, the leader of the PP in Álava, Iñaki Oyarzabal, assured a week ago that if the PNV were to ally with EH Bildu in those and other towns, it would be a red line for them.

And your answer would go through not supporting big projects in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Álava, leaving minority governments.

In addition, although its leader Carlos Iturgaiz announced support “gratis et amore”, the negotiations are not being so disinterested. So, the PP will be on the Board of Meetings of the Gipuzkoan Provincial Council. We will see what happens in Álava this Saturday.
