Polish Elections: Government-organized ‘Debate’ and Foreign Policy Impact | Pogled.info

/Pogled.info/ The last week before the voting day (October 15) for the elections to the Polish Sejm and Senate began with a televised “debate” organized by the government television channel TVP. Representatives of six political forces participated in them. The very format of the “debate” did not imply discussions.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki from the ruling “Law and Justice” party, the chairman of “Civil Platform” Donald Tusk, MP Joanna Schering-Welgus from “New Left” and MP Joanna Schering-Welgus from “Third Time” were present in the studio. Poland 2050″ Szymon Holownia, from “Confederation” – MP Krzysztof Bosak and from “Non-Party Self-Government” – Krzysztof May.

Party representatives were asked to answer six questions, each given no more than a minute. At the same time, the questions themselves sometimes read longer than the answer took. The wording of the questions was in favor of the rulers.

“Not inflation, not the failed judicial reform blocking the disbursement of funds from the European Economic Recovery Fund, not the international policy that Poland must follow in an increasingly complex geopolitical reality, but the privatization of forests, the reform of the retirement age, which no one does not plan, the defense plans from 2011, partially revealed by “PiS” – these were the topics of the only debate in the current election campaign, writes the “Rechpospolita” newspaper. “The important thing was not how relevant the issue was, but whether it could be presented as a dichotomy: ‘Civic Platform’ does everything wrong, ‘Law and Justice’ does everything right.

Therefore, the “debate” focused mainly on the exchange of insulting remarks addressed to each other by the former Prime Minister Tusk and the current Morawiecki. The rest of the participants tried to present their own programs in the allotted time, not limiting themselves to attacks on the rulers.

According to some commentators, this tactic allowed the Third Way, the Confederation and the New Left to win “easily”. But this conclusion does not yet seem obvious.

During the broadcast of the “debate” nothing new and sensational was heard that would tilt the mood of undecided voters in one direction or another. A one-hour show is not capable of that.

It seems that some changes in the mood of Polish voters will be determined by the foreign policy situation.

For “Law and Justice” it became more profitable after the attack of Hamas against Israel, as it touches on key themes in the message of “PiS” – migration crises and security.

The rulers position themselves as a tough fighter against illegal migrants. She is credited with building the Polish-Belarusian border fence against refugees and fighting a new migration deal being promoted in the European Union that would oblige EU member states to either accept migrants or pay for anyone who to whom access is denied.

Against the background of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, “Law and Justice” received fresh wind in its sails. As Morawiecki said, if Israel “hits the Gaza Strip very hard, there will be another huge wave of illegal migration.”

Speaking in the studio of the Polish Press Agency, PiS MP in the European Parliament Adam Beljan stressed that for Poland “the consequences will only be negative”. In this regard, he called, first of all, to pay special attention to ensuring the security of the Polish-Belarusian border, so that Moscow and Minsk do not organize a “new channel for transporting migrants” there.

Secondly, the MP suggested, there will be “increasing pressure in the EU to ensure compliance with the forced resettlement mechanism for refugees adopted last week by the European Parliament and the European Council, and here we need decisive action from our government.” “

The opposition tried to respond.

Discussing what happened in Israel, the leader of the Polish Peasant Party, part of the “Third Way” coalition, Władysław Kosyniak-Kamis, cited analogies.

“The authorities were involved in internal disputes,” he said on the TV channel “Polsat” The judicial system is collapsing there. The intelligence services were probably more concerned with the opposition and internal affairs than with external security. This is reminiscent of what is happening in Poland.

According to him, the Polish intelligence services are more busy with “political games” and “amateurs deal with security issues”. There is an internal conflict and lack of dialogue in the country, and those in power are responsible for this. Kosińak-Kamish wished “that this never ends in Poland the way it ended in Israel.”

Let’s see if “Law and Justice” will be able to effectively use the foreign policy factor in the last week of the election campaign. Meanwhile, the latest sociological surveys show a not the worst picture for her.

A study conducted on October 5-7 by the research agency “Ibris” for “Polsat” gives the following indicators.

34.6% want to vote for the ruling party (+ 2.2% from the previous survey), for “Civil Platform” – 27.9% (-2.7%), for “New Left” – 11.4% ( + 1.5%), for “Confederation” – 7.7% (- 1.8%). 8.1% of the respondents stated that they still do not know who they will vote for.

What is in favor of “PiS” is the drop in the rating of the “Third Time” coalition to 7.6%. To enter the Diet, it must exceed 8%. If the coalition fails, the main recipient of parliamentary seats will be the ruling party.
