“Policy Overhaul Needed: How the Food Industry is Impacting Global Brain Health”

A new study has laid out policy recommendations that could tackle different aspects of the food industry to address the development of physical and mental diseases around the world. Researchers from the Baker Institute have highlighted the need to improve brain health through the food industry in particular. They recommended that several changes be made in the industry, including front-of-package labeling, subsidies for sellers of unprocessed or minimally processed foods, and taxes on industrial food products that offer little to no nutritional value. Additionally, assistance programs should promote whole food-rich diets. The researchers also recommended holding companies making false claims about commercial milk formulas marketed as healthy accountable to ensure that governments enforce strong regulations. The study suggested that educating people about how their diet affects their brain health and promoting beneficial dietary changes, particularly in vulnerable groups, could lead to long-term improvements in mental and social health. Finally, researchers emphasized that collaboration between nutritionists, psychiatrists, psychologists, environmental health professionals, and public health experts is essential to promote the development of effective public health policies.
