Wawrowski has a silver medal from the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He played 25 matches for the Polish national team in 1974-1978. As a defender, he was famous for his bravery and tenacity.
In his opinion, it was not Szczęsny’s failure with the goal lost by us in the clash with the Islanders, but Jan Bednarek. – Let me put it this, what is this defender who turns his back to the ball he is striking? It was enough for him to take it upon himself, and then to Szczesny conceal everything, and then look for the guilty. We cannot give ourselves such goals. Besides, we played well and it was obvious that there is a keynote in our actions. When you look at it, the English did not create many situations for themselves, and we may not, but we managed to score a goal in the end – assesses Wawrowski, who until recently was the vice president for training in the West Pomeranian Football Association.
Asked about the hit of the captain of the vice-champions of Europe and the behavior of Bednarek, he adds. – As I say, if he had not turned, because it is still known now, they put their hands behind them, it would be different. Due to his move, he increased the shot area for the opponent. Otherwise, if he was standing, it would be harder to hit our goal. It’s hard, that’s the risk of getting hit, hit with a pike, at least that’s what the coaches taught me. Put your hands on you, low on your legs and take it all on yourself. Then there would probably be no goal. It is known that there was a strong hit, perhaps Szczęsny was a bit late as well, but it is primarily the fault of the defender, who has no right to behave like this. Hell, who teaches them to behave like this? – the former great Polish representative wonders.
Four rounds before the end of the qualifying round in group I, we are currently in 3rd place with 11 points on our account. We have 16 points ahead of us, with only Poles who have scored points so far, as well as Albania, which has 12 “points” after winning against San Marino on Wednesday, 5-0. In turn, the Hungarians, who are one point less than us, are behind us in the number four position.
Our team, however, has a favorable gaming calendar. The matches with the group’s definite favorite, the English, are already behind us. In turn, the Hungarians (October 12) and Albania (November 12) must also play in London. Can we be happy about the second place in the group and get ready to play in the playoffs for the World Cup in Qatar next year?
– It’s still a very long way. Here, looking at the situation in the group, it is known for us that the key will be the upcoming, October match, away game with Albania. If we do not lose there, it should be good, otherwise, it will become a problem. On the other hand, we cannot forget about the Hungarians, who will not sell the leather cheaply.
