Plotnikova, Meier, Sīlis, Leimane and Ķimele received Theater Day Excellence Awards / Article

Mikhail Chekhov’s Riga Russian Theater actress Veronika Plotnikova awarded the Lilita Bērziņa Award for outstanding performance during the last seasons and artistic work for many years. Mārtiņš Meiers, an actor from Valmiera Drama Theater, received the Harijs Liepiņš Award for outstanding acting, contribution to the art of theater, and confidence in himself and his profession during the previous seasons.

Every year, the Latvian Theater Classic Jēkabs Duburs Award is presented for teaching pedagogical work to both young actors and directors. This year, Māra Ķimele received it for almost 50 years of work in theater pedagogy. This is her second Excellence Award. The first 17 years ago was presented as a director.

The leading soloist of the Latvian National Ballet Elza Leimane was also honored today. She was awarded the Helena Tangiev-Birzniece Prize for outstanding success in the performing arts of ballet performances, as well as for active work as a choreographer.

The Valters Sīlis received the Eduards Smiļģis Award for significant, courageous and artistically high-quality productions at the Latvian National Theater – and not only.

The tradition of honoring the outstanding people of Theater Day began in 1986 with the establishment of the Eduards Smiļģis Prize for outstanding achievements in the art of theater. And, although Theater Day is celebrated internationally on March 27, these awards are presented by the Latvian Theater Employees’ Union on June 2, the day when the first Latvian play “Žūpu Bērtulis” was played in Riga 154 years ago.
