Player Ratings and Analysis: Stade Rennais FC vs Panathinaïkos

Man of the Match: Salah (not rated): He doesn’t come in until the 63rd, but that doesn’t matter! Considering the last few weeks, it was almost unbelievable to see him lacking playing time, even sanctioned and sent to the reserve even though he is one of the club’s co-top scorers. He responded in the best possible way with a goal two tiny minutes after coming into play, a mentality of steel, we must salute him.

Stade Rennais FC: 4-3-3

Gallon (6) : A match that seemed headed for frustration but which was satisfying. He distinguished himself a few times for his first in Rennes and showed that his profile was well targeted.

Theate (6) : His match also changed in the 32nd minute as he was placed back in the center of defense even though he was a full-back. He manages his emotions well and delivers a convincing and organized performance.

Belocian (4) : We will say what we want, the penalty is not contested, the fault is not very useful because two of his teammates are screening in addition to Gallon. He makes a mistake of inexperience. Then, red changes the match, but this one is debatable…

Whoah (6) : Having been banned for several matches, he is doing well and is taking points ahead of Omari who is struggling to convince.

G. Doué (6): Half-hearted, his defense was not always excellent but his forward runs in the style of his competitor Assignon brought a lot to his team and in particular to Blas at the end of the match. The legacy of Hamari Traoré.

The Fairy (5.5): A little below, he did not attract the spotlight without completely missing his match.

Matić (8) : Its benchmark match in its new colors. Three matches in one: his task is to keep the ball and throw low before the red, does it well, then has to step back and seems in difficulty before showing all his malice, that representing all the experience he accumulates, in causing a penalty that he owes everything to his great experience. It is replaced by Assignon at the 90+3rd, after an end of the match where his experience still speaks to gain precious seconds.

Wheels (6): He offered a lot in a rather ambiguous but nevertheless interesting role. He had the arduous task of taking the place of the irremovable Bourigeaud and did it rather well in his own register. He adds a goal, not very beautiful but effective, to his tally, his first in Brittany. Replaced by Santamaria in the 63rd to balance the game.

Terrier (5.5) : Gradually returning, he has his first start in Europe for almost a year and delivered a match without more or less. He is replaced in the 63rd by a Salah decisive and Man of the Match tonight (see above).

Kalimuendo (not noted) : His start to the match is satisfactory without being disappointing, he is sadly replaced to compensate for the expulsion of Belocian. Truffert (6) enters at the 35th, passes to the left and Theate, aligned on the side, returns to the axis.

Bourrigeaud (5.5) : Very involved in his role as captain, he put pressure on the referee, a little too much, and took yellow. Good in the game, he could have done better on several occasions. Replaced by Blas in the 63rd, undoubtedly very well briefed by Génésio since he was the lucky decisive passer for Salah then scorer on an unstoppable penalty, the Blas special, powerful and in the middle.

Panathinaïkos : 4-3-3

Brignoli (3.5): A rather worrying level. It begins with an unforgivable mistake at the professional level, quite incredible it must be said. A harmless ball from a free kick, which he can easily catch halfway up but he lets it pass, and concedes a goal on a blunder. Then, he didn’t gain confidence and didn’t know how to make saves at the right times.

Mladenović (5.5): He managed to muzzle a Bourigeaud still displaced in the eleven.

Hardly (4.5) : Not the most convincing at the back, his passes worthy of real finds during the first leg remained in Athens.

Schenkeveld (6) : A real boss in this defense with brilliant defensive returns when his team faced a reinvigorated Stade Rennais.

Vagiannidis (5) : A dull match, he is quite absent from Salah’s goal, too bad: it’s the one that changes everything. He does not follow his player when marking. Replaced by Sporaran attacker for a defender, in the 79th.

Vilhena (4.5): A good player, but who didn’t show it tonight. He took the tide like his teammates, and conceded the penalty which put Rennes at a distance that was difficult to reach.

Pérez (5) : With the importance ofAaron on the way out, it’s quite incredible to see the hub of this formation only return in the 79th minute. Pérez had no influence on the game and Arão was notable by his absence.

Cerin (4) : Quite transparent, the Greek tactical scheme modeled on the Rennes scheme did not work compared to the 4-2-3-1 of the first leg. Replaced by Djuricic (4) at the break, for a more than mixed result.

Bernard (6) : Hard-hitting, he caused real problems for Doué but especially for Bourigeaud who never knew how to get back into position quickly enough to slow down Pana’s attacks. Replaced by Cantalapedra at the 72nd.

Ioannidis (6) : A pebble in the shoe of Rennais. Omnipresent, he is everywhere and shows very good qualities. But like his team, he sorely lacks realism: losing 3-1 against a team that is numerically inferior and mentally tough (until the hour mark) is a mistake. The Greeks had victory in hand but let it slip away.

Palacios (6) : Less flamboyant than on the first leg, he left this role to Bernard, but he still caused harm to his successive counterparts. Replaced by Mancini at the 72nd.
