(CNN) – At least five people died on Saturday when a small plane crashed near the Lafayette regional airport in Louisiana, USA, said Lafayette fire chief Robert Benoit.
A person on board survived the accident, which happened at 9:22 a.m. local time, Benoit said at a press conference.
The survivor was taken to the hospital along with three people who were on the floor, Benoit said.
The eight-passenger plane took off from the airport when it crashed, Benoit said.
According to the National Meteorological Service, weather conditions at the Lafayette Regional Airport were classified as foggy on Saturday morning, with a visibility of 1.2 kilometers. At 7 a.m. local time, visibility was 0.4 kilometers, which the NWS designates as “dense fog.”
Lafayette is about 209 kilometers west of New Orleans.
